Yellow Belts: Powerful Drivers of Change. When I mention yellow belts, or Yellow Belt as they are known in English, what comes to mind first? A yellow leather belt? Perhaps a karate practitioner with a yellow belt? No! It is neither of those.
Yellow Belts
Yellow Belts are major catalysts for change. They are people working in organizations, people like you and me, with one difference: they have the knowledge needed to manage important, far-reaching, fundamental changes at their root.
These people are trained to identify waste, improvement opportunities and all the activities that add no organizational value and make us lose money.
But they have not only developed that skill; they have also developed the ability to help organizations make money!
And how come they do this, these people?
Quite simply, they can eliminate everything that adds no value to an organization. They can identify simple improvements such as reducing paper use or arranging a warehouse, office or production line so that people and materials move as little as possible, making work flow faster. They can also identify where money is being lost and optimize resource use.
These powerful drivers of change help us reengineer processes, improve inventory management and production line efficiency, eliminate bureaucracy from administrative processes, improve recruitment and selection, and even improve operating cost analysis. They can also improve an organization's sales, marketing and market intelligence processes.
Interested? Let me tell you more. The great power that enables these people to accomplish everything described in previous paragraphs is the LEAN SIX SIGMA Philosophy. It provides tools and methodologies for major changes that help eliminate everything that adds no value, generates waste, and help reduce variation in processes.
Some of the tools that these people know and can run are:
Kaizen for continuous improvement, Kanban for effective inventory management, 5S as the starting point of excellence, and even tools such as Lean Accounting to establish optimal cost management, along with statistical tools for analyzing variation within processes. The 5 skills of a Black Belt
Best of all, becoming a Yellow Belt requires only initiative and the desire to start making changes. Anyone can train as a Yellow Belt, from an operator eager to learn and drive change to a company's CEO. People from any department—production, marketing, sales, operations, logistics or maintenance—can participate: anyone who wants, seeks or has the profile to generate significant organizational change.
And the final question is: Do you dare to change and become a Yellow Belt?
