Most companies view an external consultant or instructor as an expense and have set about developing their own consultants, assuming this costs less.

However, have you considered that, in the long run, this investment might cost more than outsourcing? Why? The answer is simple: your employees also aspire to grow and will pursue that growth inside or outside the company. The investment you make today could therefore become a drain on money or, more seriously, on knowledge and talent.

You may say, “That does not happen to me!” Let us analyze it briefly. Investing in Six Sigma Black Belt training creates a group focused on savings, improvement projects, increased profits and, of course, specialist trainers. What does it cost? Usually, depending on the certifying body, between 4000 and 7000 USD per person. Dollars—you read that correctly. Multiply that by 5 people and you would pay between 20,000 and 35,000 USD.

You are probably thinking the investment should pay for itself in 6 months or less. Over time, however, the expertise these 5 people acquire could make them your next management team—if you know how to retain them. Sadly, they may instead move to another company offering better working conditions, requiring another similar investment in new Black Belts.

Suppose this investment is made every two or three years, because these people generally progress quickly. Over a period of 10 years, the investment would total between USD 100,000 and USD 175,000.

Now consider what happens if you hire a consultant with those skills specifically, for example, to reduce waste. What if your waste amounts to a conservative USD 150,000 annually? What if the consultant initially charges around USD 500 to USD 600 for the diagnosis? Afterward, the fee is 5% of the savings achieved during the project. For example, if we reduce waste from USD 150,000 to USD 50,000, the consultant would charge only USD 2,500. The total investment in an external expert would be approximately USD 3,000.

It is immensely less, right? But have you considered that the consultant will transfer the knowledge gained to the staff you had planned to train? Those employees will ultimately gain other skills and attitudes that help them grow. Instead of paying USD 20,000–35,000, your investment was USD 3,000. What do you think? Convinced?

Those 3,000 USD also include staff training with materials, practical exercises and certificates within the improvement process.

Look, let's use the same one-year period. Suppose you worked with the consultant each year on projects averaging USD 5,000. That means you spent USD 50,000, compared with USD 175,000 to train your own staff—less than half the investment! But here is the important part: you will have achieved approximately USD 1,000,000 in savings! Still not convinced?
