Coaching and Leadership

Coaching and Leadership. The secret is helping people break through their mental frameworks and reach places they never imagined.

What is a coach? Who is a coach?

Coaching and Leadership. Dear reader, first we must be clear about what we mean. Coaching is a supportive methodology that helps people reach their full potential. A coach is not a mentor, instructor, teacher, shaman or facilitator, and does not teach you how to do something. These approaches have different purposes, although they sometimes work in similar ways.

Why are there so many coaches, so many things?

There are many types of coaching: life, ontological, business, executive, management, family, couples, vocational and others. All are equally valuable and powerful; their suitability depends on the individual’s needs. Guiding someone struggling with life’s ups and downs differs from helping someone stuck in their career or seeking business solutions, a way out of a creative cycle or a creative boost.

What is clear is that “COACHING” is perhaps the most widely used word in business, but also one of the most misunderstood because of its translation from English.

So, with that introduction, what is this Coaching and Leadership certification all about? What is the benefit? How will it help me?

Well, let's start with a basic and elementary premise:

Not every leader is necessarily a coach, but every great leader is necessarily a coach for their team-

With that assertion, we must recognize that organizations have managers and directors of the highest caliber, with outstanding careers and reputations, who have reached their companies' most senior positions through their own efforts and achievements. However, evolving business culture, intergenerational clashes, globalization and free trade agreements, together with the standardization of processes and products, have forced a new generation of leaders to emerge. Companies such as Google and Facebook are quickly adopting them because they realize that hierarchical leadership models are becoming obsolete: “management” focuses on an employee's performance and prioritizes it over their potential.

We know how to work with people who are productive and achieve goals

but not with the people who could become the story’s future heroes through their strengths and virtues, as well as their weaknesses and flaws. Today, these companies are replacing the traditional manager and director roles with coaches for their teams.

They understand that knowing the job and how to do it gives them a position few attain. Yet we have generally forgotten to train these leaders in fundamental skills such as coaching so they can transform their employees’ development. Staff who work well but do not grow—as people, professionals or financially—are not enough. We encounter leaders who start shouting, insulting and cracking the whip the moment they arrive at work, while others are always there teaching and getting their hands dirty alongside their teams as members of the same tribe.

The approach is not bad; it is starting to become obsolete

because these managers and directors invest hours, days, weeks and months training their employees to become increasingly better at their jobs. But beyond those jobs, there is nothing more. Why? Because they do not know how to do anything else, and their mental models limit them to certain tasks. When a leader tries to move them out of their comfort zone—when that actually happens—they hit a wall, because the leaders themselves lack the ability and training to break mental models, overcome fears and challenge the paradigms held by their teams.

Then frustration follows for both employee and leader. The relationship deteriorates and either breaks down or enters a won-der-ful oasis of comfort. All because my team's performance developed month after month based on its KPI´s, but, sadly, its potential was never nurtured. That seemingly robust employee is actually hollow inside.

Are you a leader? Surely you are one of the good ones. No? Then you need to work on it.

For these reasons and more, we developed our Coaching and Leadership certification. Our master coach—certified as a coach and international speaker by John Maxwell, the global coaching and leadership expert—learned techniques and tools firsthand from a group of top international coaches endorsed by John Maxwell. We now want to share them to create a new generation of leaders in Mexico.

It is not just about leadership: it is about developing a new leadership model that drives employees' growth so they reach their full potential. It is not training, skills instruction or making them study. The secret is helping them break out of their mental frameworks and reach places they never imagined.
